2006 Reebok ABCD Camp Player Eval: Corey Stokes

Teaneck, N.J. -- Corey Stokes, Class of 2007, 6'5", Wing from St. Benedict's (NJ) and the Metro Hawks AAU program gave a verbal commitment to Villanova in June.  He was in action at the 2006 Reebok ABCD Camp this past weekend and VUSports was on-hand to witness all seven of his games.  Corey's highlights included wonderful performances head-to-head against two of the elite players in the camp – O.J. Mayo and Taylor King.  Stokes has a great three-point stroke but oddly went through a four game stretch in the middle of the camp in which he did not make a single three.  Against Mayo, Corey drained three consecutive 22 footers from the wing in a torrid 8-minute stretch where he dropped 11 points.

Stokes' first and last games of the tournament were his best all-around performance – 17 points and 4 rebounds (in 16 minutes of action) against Taylor King and a 13 point, 5 rebound, 2 assist game against O.J. Mayo.

Strengths: Corey has had a Big East ready body since his sophomore year in High School.  In the past year, he has gotten leaner – adding strength and quickness to what was already an impressive basketball physique.  What stood out the most this weekend was Corey's defense.  He did a nice job on both Taylor King and Devin Ebanks and was doing well against O.J. Mayo until O.J. decided to force Corey to guard him from the top of the key and Stokes was abused somewhat off the dribble by a player who established his reputation as the number one player in the Class of 2007 in large part due to his fantastic ability to create off the bounce.  In a tournament with a no zone rule, Stokes was left hanging a bit.  When you consider the general lack of defense at times at ABCD, Corey's defensive consistency and effort was admirable.  Stokes has improved his ability to create his own shot off the dribble in the past year.  His handle still has room for improvement but Stokes gets himself space to shoot more easily and converts more frequently on his forays to the tin.  The form on Corey's outside jumper looked solid all weekend.  However, as mentioned above he did go through a dry spell from beyond the arc – which resulted in him shooting 33.3% from three for the event.  TO his credit, he was more selective than many campers when it came to firing away from long range.  That said, in some games Corey really forced the issue off the dribble.  Stokes can guard 2s, 3s and smaller 4s.  Solid stroke from the FT line.

Weaknesses: Inconsistency on offense.   Still needs to improve his handle.  His ability to find teammates when he needs an outlet on a drive to the hole is improving but still needs work.
