Nova Marches Over Hawks: 98-68

After St. Joseph's (PA) put forth a nice little first-half effort to provide the Hawk faithful with some false hope, Villanova marched out and dominated every facet of the game for the final twenty minutes to win a 98-68 laugher on Hawk Hill. James Bell led the #14 ranked, Wildcats with 25 points and 14 rebounds while JayVaughn Pinkston added 27 points.

In a questionable coaching decision, Coach Martelli played plenty of man-to-man defense despite both having a weak bench and playing against a 'Nova team that tends to settle for deep shots when given them by zone defense and struggle to score effectively inside against zones. The result of the man-to-man defense was pretty predictable Villanova attacked it, the Hawks had no answer for Pinkston and important Hawk players got into foul trouble. The Cats edged SJU(PA) significantly in fast break points, points off turnovers, points in the paint and second chance points.

The win moves the Cats to 2-0 in Big Five play this season and Villanova Coach Jay Wright to 38-12 (.760) all-time against Big Five competition. Villanova advances to 9-0 for the season overall (the 10th time in school history and 3rd time under Coach Wright that 'Nova has started a season 9-0 (or better)).

Villanova doesn't lace 'em up for the record again until Sunday, December 15th at 2:30 at the Pavilion against LaSalle (on Fox Sports 1)

Positives:

Only 5 turnovers

59 point scoring outburst in 2nd half

9-16 (56.3%) 3PFG shooting in the 2nd Half

24 point scoring edge from beyond the arc

Held SJU(PA) without a three-pointer in the 2nd Half (0-9)

30.0% FG defense in the 2nd Half

Areas of Concern:

Out-rebounded in the first half

3-14 (21.4%) 3PFG shooting in the 1st Half

Porous defense permitted too many easy SJU(PA) looks in the first 10 minutes

Player Notes:

James Bell: Bell not only filled the pail from beyond the arc, particularly in the 2nd Half, but he also played great defense and was all over the glass - pulling down 14 boards. One of the best games of his career the Senior continues to play great basketball while exhibiting poise and leadership.

Darrun Hilliard: Solid performance from Hilliard as well. He didn't post huge numbers but was very effective and in control. He handled the ball well against pressure, picked the right spots in which to be aggressive off the dribble, and also played well on the defensive end of the floor.

Ryan Arcidiacono: It was encouraging to see Arcidiacono knock down multiple 3-balls in a game. He played one of his stronger floor games - helping to break pressure, setting up his teammates, and creating some offense for others off the dribble and in transition he tallied 4 assists with only 2 turnovers.

JayVaughn Pinkston: The Hawks didn't have anyone who could come close to guarding Pinkston in the lane and he tore them up in the paint. He made a handful of old-school, and-one three-point plays on his way to 27 points. 8 Rebounds is notable for Pinkston who at times struggles to be a difference-maker on the backboards.

Daniel Ochefu: Ochefu was back in the starting line-up and did a decent job defensively and on the boards. However, he continues to have difficulty with fouls. Ochefu stepped up and hit a couple FTs at a juncture in the game where a flagrant 1 tech call could have swung the momentum of the game had he missed his FTs. He was 2-2 for the floor - which is notable for a player shooting 29% from the field going into the game.

Tony Chennault: Couldn't buy a bucket from the field but he distributed the ball well, made good decisions, and defended aggressively. A decent 12 minute effort for Chennault despite the 0-4 shooting.

Josh Hart: Made several "wow" plays in his 22 minutes .. the Frosh continues to impress with his blend of athleticism, hustle and basketball IQ. 6 points, 7 rebounds (4 offensive), 2 assists, 0 turnovers and a blocked shot - that is how you stuff a stat sheet playing in a hostile gym as a Frosh.

Kris Jenkins: Has a made trey, four rebounds and somehow 5 personal fouls to show for his 10 minutes of action. The game featured a lot of transition play - perhaps he was winded quickly and playing defense more with his hands than his feet to compensate.

Dylan Ennis: Made his FTs, shared the ball well and had a nice drive through some poor Hawk help defense for a lay-up. Didn't shoot it well and was out of position on defense several times.
