Cats Hammer Mountaineers

After a slow start that had the Wildcats behind by a score of 7-8 at the 15:40 mark of the first half, Villanova's offense exploded to run out to a 46-25 half-time lead behind a flurry of transition buckets. The second-half consisted of 'Nova grabbing defensive rebounds or forcing turnovers and then pushing the ball out in transition to create easy scoring opportunities in the paint leading to a dominant 90-59 victory for Villanova over Mount St. Mary's. Mount St. Mary's attempt to play man-to-man pressure defense against Villanova's, guard-oriented offense proved to be a flawed plan. Time and again, Villanova either scored in transition or by making the extra pass in the half-court offense to find cutters or players in position to attack the basket.

The lay-up line offense of Villanova easily overpowered MSMs tepid first half offense and solid 34 point second-half effort which was spear-headed by frequent trips to the free-throw line

'Nova advances to 2-0 on the young season and will face Towson on Sunday, November 17th at 5:00 at the Pavilion on Fox Sports 1.

Positives:

Hustle and aggressiveness on both ends of the floor

Three Cats with 17 or more points

Bench play of Chennault and Hart with Ochefu in foul trouble

60-16 Points in the Paint edge for Villanova thanks to an obscene amount of dribble penetration and lay-ups in transition

62.7% shooting from the floor ... courtesy of MSMs weak man-to-man, pressure defense and the Cats aggression on offense

In the last three halves the Cats have posted 46, 46 and 44 points.

Areas of Concern:

58.8% shooting from the FT line

Outscored by 7 at the FT line on 8 more attempts

A string of late turnovers drove the game total to 18 - but the majority of that was in the opening and closing geminates of a game that was decided in the 34 minutes in-between

Player Notes:

James Bell: 12 points, 8 boards, 4 assists, and 2 steals in 30 minutes that is a quality effort. Throw in a nice defensive effort and good shot selection and you have a solid outing from a Senior. Finished one of the plays of the game on the "business end" of a reverse-dunk alley-oop. Springs!

Darrun Hilliard: His offensive efficiency and ability to finish strong in transition stood out in his performance tonight. He had several nice takes in transition and shot 8-10 from the floor with 2 Assist, 1 Turnover and a steal in only 24 minutes of action.

Ryan Arcidiacono: Continues to be a bit off his game offensively but this outing was an improvement over the previous. Arcidiacono connected on a trey, posted 9 points and dished out 4 assists. His 3 turnovers, including some struggles against pressure were certainly not a positive. Logged the most minutes of any Wildcat with 32.

JayVaughn Pinkston: A tidy 21 points on 9-15 shooting from the floor were the highlights of his efficient offensive outing despite a 1-4 shooting performance from beyond the arc. Pinkston will have to be more consistent on the glass moving forward.

Daniel Ochefu: Was on the bench with two fouls before the game was three minutes old. With him out, Villanova's defensive intensity seemed to increase and with it the offense began to get easier looks in transition and convert. Rebounded the ball very effectively in his limited minutes but he didn't take care of the ball while tallying 4 personal fouls in only 8 minutes of action.

Tony Chennault: Took care of the ball with 6 Assists and only 1 turnover. Took good shots and made good decisions with the rock in transition. His defense and leadership were difference-makers in the first-half when Ochefu went to the bench early with foul trouble.

Josh Hart: Earned every second of his 22 minutes of play. Got after every loose ball in his area (and beyond), was a force on the boards, showed the ability to handle the ball effectively when in the open court, drained a trey and attacked the tin relentlessly to score 17 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor to go with a game high 11 rebounds. First double-double of his two-game Villanova career. Plays hard! Wants it!

Kris Jenkins: Dropped in the first four 'Nova points of his career in close to the basket. Showed a willingness to mix it up a bit on the boards and in the paint but that also translated into 4 personal fouls in only 16 minutes of play.

Darryl Reynolds: Reynolds got ten minutes of run and contributed 5 rebounds and a blocked shot on the defensive end. Showed good control and patience for a Frosh when he turned the ball over trying to turn a defensive rebound into a transition opportunity and then made a positive defense play instead of drawing a foul by trying too hard to make up for the TO.

Henry Lowe: Oh Henry! Grabbed a manly rebound in traffic and slipped loose for a lay-up to post two points in two minutes. Got a little loose with the handle.

Nick McMahon: Contributed a rugged three minutes of play.

Patrick Farrell: Tallied a steal and a board in a passionate, 2 minute run.
