James Bell at Media Day
Wednesday in New York at Big East Media Day, Villanova Senior Forward, James Bell took some time to chat with VUSports.com about the upcoming season:
VUSports: You're a Senior now … did it go too quick?
James Bell: Too quick, no. But it did go quick.
VUSports: How is your role on the team different as a Senior?
James Bell: It is exciting to see the younger guys grow up. I feel like I was just here with Antonio Pena, Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher and just being the youngest and now I am on the other side of that and seeing other people grow up. I am growing into a man now. It is an exciting process to first live through and then see others begin.
VUSports: In practice, you seem to know just what Coach Jay Wright wants out of you and you can provide quiet leadership ...
James Bell: That comes with time in our program and at any program. When you get older you know what your coach wants, what they expect, and you know what it takes to win at this level.
VUSports: There have been games where you are quiet offensively for long stretches and then you exhibit ice-water in your veins to hit the big shot - where does that ability come from?
James Bell: It is the confidence that coach instills in us. Even good shooters are going to miss some. If you play the percentages and one out of three shots maybe are going to go in depending on how you are shooting that year or in that game. So you have to keep your confidence and keep shooting.
VUSports: What did you work on this summer in order to improve your game?
James Bell: Being solid and trying to add more to my game, slowing down, and becoming an all-around good basketball player.
VUSports: What do you mean by slowing down?
James Bell: By that I mean decision-making and being a better leader … things of that nature that come with getting older.
VUSports: How are Darryl Reynolds, Kris Jenkins and Josh Hart integrating into the team?
James Bell: We love them. They are doing great. They came in with an open mid-set that they know that they don't know everything and they are willing to learn and that is the most important thing.
VUSports: What are you most excited about with the new Big East?
James Bell: It is great to have the chance to play everybody both home and away. That is different. I am also excited about going through this process with a different group of guys.
VUSports: The league and Fox Sports are doing a lot to promote the league - such as the New Year's eve quintuple header with Villanova playing Butler at Hinkle … what are your thoughts on that?
James Bell: I think it is great with the new league doing all the promotions and Fox Sports 1 helping. The opportunities they are providing us with are something you don't always get so we will cherish it while we have it.
VUSports: What about the the possibility of Gus Johnson going off on one of your big-time, three-point shots at the end of a game ...
James Bell: Now that would be something to tell your kids about!
VUSports: Thank you, Tahj. Best of luck during the season.
