Darryl Reynolds, a 6'8" Forward from Worcester Academy, MA announced today in a press conference held at Lower Merion High School (PA) that he will attend Villanova University and play basketball for Jay Wright.
This is much needed good news on the "big man" recruiting front for the Wildcats given that Daniel Ochefu was the only player over 6'6" tall on the Villanova roster prior to Reynolds commitment.
VUSports was on-hand to participate in a Q&A with Reynolds after the press conference:
Q: What are the strengths of your game?
A: I am a versatile player. I can defend several positions - three through five. I can pretty much shoot from anywhere on the floor. Obviously I am more comfortable with the 15 footer but whatever is needed by Coach Wright and his coaching staff at Villanova I will do. I am working more on shooting the three and my perimeter skills and being more of an all-around player. I don't believe in set positions I believe in just being a basketball player.
Q: Did Coach Wright speak with you about your role next season
A: Because they only have one player, Daniel Ochefu, who is over 6'6" next year and I am 6'8" - 6'9" it will be an opportunity to step in and make an impact because of height alone.
Q: Did you watch Villanova growing up?
A: I watched the Big Five but I didn't have a pinpoint on Villanova. I can't pretend it was always like "that's the school" because I didn't really have one growing up. But when I went there [Villanova] I knew that was for me. The one thing that is guaranteed is that we are going to work hard.
Q: Was staying close to home the deciding factor?
A: It was a plus but it wasn't the deciding factor. I told my coaches that if the University of Alaska was the best place for me I would go to Alaska. To me the distance didn't matter. I am not saying that being home didn't help but it wasn't the deciding factor.
Q: What were some other factors?
A: It was a big thing for me that [the schools I was considering] were "recruiting high character guys". Not just ballplayers but guys who can get up in front of a camera and speak and guys who can interact through the campus. They [all four schools] all had that but I felt the best fit for me was Villanova.
Q: What will you major in?
A: Business and Communications. After basketball is over and the ball stops bouncing, I want to get into directing and producing films and working with movie scripts and things like that - Hollywood stuff. Villanova has a great Communications program and a great Business School.
Q: So Father Peter sold you on the Villanova Theater Program?
A: Yes. I don't think it was Father Peter but one of the guys giving me the tour really sold me on how the business and communications programs are among the best in the world.
