The Cats are dancing again! For the 33rd time in program history, Villanova earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats earned a #9 Seed and will face #8 Seed North Carolina on Friday with the winner advancing to play #1 Seed, Kansas in Kansas City on Sunday (provided there is not an unprecedented #16 over #1 Seed upset).
This is the fifth time in program history that the Cats have been seeded #9. Villanova has a 2-4 record all-time as a 9 Seed:
1981: Beat Houston then Lost to #1 Seeded Virginia
1991: Beat Princeton then lost to #1 Seed North Carolina
2007: Lost to #8 Seed Kentucky
2011: Lost to #8 Seed George Mason
This is the sixth time that Villanova and UNC will meet in NCAA Tournament play. The Cats are 1-4 all-time against UNC in the NCAAs. An interesting thing to note is that 80% of the time these two teams have met in the NCAA the winner went on to win the National Championship: Villanova ('85), UNC ('82, '05, '09).
Here is the all-time series in NCAA play:
1982: Regional Final: UNC 70 Villanova 60 (Sam Perkins, James Worthy and Michael Jordan starred for UNC)
1985: Regional Final: Villanova 56 UNC 44 (Pinckney and the Expansion Crew with a spark from Harold Jensen off the bench took care of Dean Smith's Heels)
1991: Second Round: #1 Seed UNC 84 Villanova 69
2005: Regional Semi-Final: UNC 67 Villanova 66 (A-Ray didn't travel)
2009 National Semi-Final: UNC 83 Villanova 69
Also interesting to note is that every Jay Wright high school recruiting class has had the opportunity to play against UNC in the NCAAs.
Villanova has an all-time record of 49-32 (.605) in NCAA Tournament action. The Wildcats postseason bid is the 50th in program history. North Carolina and Villanova both reached that 50 appearance milestone (combined NCAA/NIT) this season to join Kentucky, St. John's and Louisville in that exclusive club.
